How to Get Your Ring Ready for Engagement Photos

How to Get Your Ring Ready for Engagement Photos

Your engagement photos will capture your ring in a way almost nothing else does: close-up, in beautiful light, held up for everyone to see for years to come. That's a lot of pressure for one small piece of jewelry, which is exactly why it's worth a little prep before your shoot.

The good news is that getting your ring photo-ready doesn't take much time or effort. A few simple steps in the days beforehand can be the difference between a ring that sparkles the way it did the day you got it and one that photographs a little tired. Whether your ring is brand new or you've been wearing it for months, here's how to get it truly ready before your engagement photos.

Why Diamonds Lose Their Sparkle So Quickly

It can be easy to forget that diamonds and other gemstones are delicate and susceptible to losing their brilliance when worn in everyday life. Hand creams, lotions, soaps, and cooking oils can all find their way onto your ring and build up in the setting within days of wearing it. As a result, your beautiful diamond may appear cloudy and dull in photographs, since that buildup reduces how much light it reflects. Fortunately, there's an easy solution.

Getting Your Ring Professionally Cleaned in Advance

Getting your ring professionally cleaned is one thing you’ll definitely want to do before your photo session. A professional cleaning removes buildup from inside the setting and other hard-to-reach areas that can be tough to clean at home.

We recommend bringing your ring in about 3 to 5 days before your engagement photos for a cleaning and inspection. If your ring needs any repairs, keep in mind that jewelry repair typically has a 10–12 day turnaround time, so be sure to bring it in a little earlier to make sure everything is ready and looking its best for your photos.

Our jewelry repair team is always happy to assist in advance of your big day, so don't hesitate to schedule your appointment.

Having Your Prongs Checked Before the Photos

The prongs on your ring are the metal claws that hold the diamonds and other gemstones in place. Prongs can loosen on their own after wearing your ring, so we always recommend having them inspected and tightened prior to your photos, as well as before your actual wedding day. When in doubt, it's always better to be safe, and tightening loose prongs is a quick, easy procedure for our jewelry repair team.

Make Sure the Ring Fits Perfectly

A ring that fits well looks nice on your finger and photographs beautifully. Rings that are too big or too small tend to look bad in pictures and pose a safety hazard, too. If the ring is too big, it can easily slip off your finger and twist the center stone, causing it to look crooked.

On the other hand, if the ring is too small, it will also look unpleasant in photographs. If it's been a few weeks since you got the ring and it doesn't seem to be fitting quite right, this is a perfect opportunity to come in and have it sized. Ring sizing is one of our most common services, and it's always worth having done if the fit feels off before your photos.

Browse our beautiful selection of engagement rings to see how we design our rings to fit and look on the hand, and remember, the same care goes into making sure yours fits just as well.

Getting Your Ring Appraised Is Always a Good Idea

If you haven't had your ring appraised yet, we always recommend doing so before your photos. A jewelry appraisal is a formal document listing all the relevant information about the ring, including metal and gemstone type, measurements, and other details that establish its value for insurance purposes.

We offer jewelry appraisal services and recommend having one done if you haven't already. Many couples find it helpful to have all their documentation in order before the ring appears in photos on social media or elsewhere.

Maintaining Your Ring Ahead of Time

After a professional ring cleaning, a little simple maintenance will help you look your best on the day of the shoot.

Remove your ring before applying any creams or lotions, rinse your hands before putting it back on, and store it safely when you sleep instead of wearing it. Also, avoid cooking with oil while wearing your ring before the photo shoot.

Right before you go in for your portrait session, give your ring a gentle buff with a clean cloth to remove fingerprints and add a little extra shine for the camera.

Tips for Metal Care

Bring a jewelry cleaning cloth with you on the day of your shoot. Photographers who specialize in engagement and wedding sessions will sometimes take a dedicated ring shot, a detailed macro image of the ring itself, either on a nice stand or in the hands of the couple. A final gentle buff right before this shot can make all the difference.

If you notice your ring catching on something or looking crooked in any way, make sure to mention it when you come in for your cleaning or repair appointment.

FAQ About Getting an Engagement Ring Ready for Photos

How far in advance should I get my ring cleaned for photos?

We recommend getting your ring professionally cleaned about 3 to 5 days before your photos. If it needs any repairs, keep in mind that jewelry repair usually takes about 10–12 days. Giving yourself a little extra time means your jeweler can clean it, check everything over, and take care of any issues so your ring looks its best for your photo shoot.

Can I clean my engagement ring at home before the photos?

You can do a light at-home cleaning before the photos, but for engagement photos specifically, a full professional cleaning will provide better results.

What should I ask for when I go in to get my ring cleaned?

Ask your jeweler to check all the prongs, perform a professional cleaning, and confirm the ring fits properly. If you haven't already, it's also a good idea to get a jewelry appraisal before your photos.

How can I keep my ring clean before the photo session?

Remove your ring before applying lotions or creams, rinse it off before putting it back on, and gently buff it with a jewelry polishing cloth daily. Avoid wearing it while cooking with oil, and avoid wearing it to sleep when possible.

Does the ring need to be resized before engagement photos?

Resizing isn't always necessary if the ring fits comfortably. But if it slips or twists on your finger, it's a good idea to have it resized by a professional jeweler in advance of your photos, so it looks just as beautiful in the pictures as it does on your hand.

What is the difference between a ring cleaning and an appraisal?

A ring cleaning is a professional service that removes buildup and debris from the ring. A jewelry appraisal is a formal, written document listing details about your ring, used for insurance purposes.

We hope our tips help you prepare your engagement ring for pictures. Your engagement is an important milestone, and these are some of the first photos you'll ever take as a couple, so you want the images to look incredible. That's why at Peter & Co. Jewelers, we do everything we can to make sure you take those pictures feeling confident and beautiful. From professional ring cleaning and prong inspections to resizing and appraisals, we can provide anything your ring may need before this special moment.

Schedule your complimentary ring care or repair appointment in advance of your photos with our showroom team, and we'll take wonderful care of it.
