Once you've chosen your dress, bridal jewelry usually becomes much easier to picture. You can see how the neckline works, decide what your hairstyle leaves visible, and get a better sense of how much jewelry feels right.

At Peter & Co. Jewelers, we help brides work through these details one piece at a time. Some arrive with family jewelry already picked out. Others are starting with their engagement ring and an empty list. Either way, this checklist will help you prepare without overlooking anything important.

Start With Your Engagement Ring

Your engagement ring will be photographed throughout the day, so we always recommend you give it a little extra attention before the wedding.

Check the fit first. If the ring has become loose or tight, leave enough time for resizing. You should also have the prongs, setting, and stones inspected, especially if you’ve worn the ring for several years or it was passed down through the family.

A professional cleaning will bring back its sparkle before the ceremony. Our jewelry repair team can inspect, clean, and resize your ring so it’s ready for the day.

Still searching for the ring? Browse our engagement rings or visit us in Avon Lake to try on a few styles.

Choose the Wedding Band Early

Try wedding bands alongside your engagement ring instead of judging them separately. The height and shape of the engagement setting will affect how closely the two rings sit.

Some rings pair naturally with a straight band. Others need a curved or contoured style to sit comfortably around the center setting. You may prefer a plain metal band, a row of diamonds, or something with engraving and texture.

Metal matters too. Think about durability, color, and how the band will look with jewelry you already wear. Your band can coordinate with your partner’s ring, though each of you can choose the style that feels best on your own hand.

Shopping together can be a nice pause in the middle of wedding planning. Browse our wedding bands and give yourselves time to compare the options.

Find Earrings That Work With the Whole Look

Earrings frame your face and show up in nearly every close photograph. Your dress, veil, and hairstyle will help determine the right size.

Diamond studs and pearl earrings are easy bridal choices. A drop or chandelier style adds more movement and works beautifully with an updo. If your hair will be down, make sure the earrings remain visible without catching.

Look at the neckline as well. A detailed or high neckline often needs very little near the face. An open neckline gives you room for a longer earring or stronger design.

Try the earrings while wearing your veil or hairpiece. Details that look delicate on their own can feel busier once everything is together.

Explore our earring collection for diamond studs, pearls, hoops, colored gemstones, and drop styles.

Decide Whether You Want a Necklace

Your dress’s neckline will answer much of this question.

Strapless, sweetheart, scoop, and V-neck dresses usually leave room for a pendant or short strand. High necklines, illusion lace, and heavily beaded bodices may already feel complete around the neck.

A single diamond pendant can add a quiet point of light. Pearls bring softness, while a colored gemstone may carry personal meaning or serve as your “something blue.”

If you plan to wear a family necklace, bring it in early. We can check the clasp, inspect the setting, and clean the piece before the wedding.

Browse our necklaces and compare the chain length with the neckline of your dress.

Remember the Bracelet

Bracelets are easy to forget until you see the complete look together. With a sleeveless or short-sleeved dress, a slim bracelet can add just enough detail at the wrist.

A diamond tennis bracelet, pearl strand, or fine gold bangle all work well for bridal jewelry. Try it with your bouquet and make sure the clasp or setting won’t catch on lace or other delicate fabric.

Many brides wear a bracelet on the right wrist to balance the engagement ring and wedding band on the left. Our bracelet collection includes simple styles as well as more substantial pieces.

Choose Your Something Borrowed

Family jewelry is one of the most natural ways to include “something borrowed.” You might wear your mother’s bracelet, your grandmother’s pearl earrings, a close friend’s necklace, or an heirloom ring on your right hand.

Have the piece inspected before the wedding, particularly if it has been stored for a long time. Older prongs and clasps can become fragile even when the jewelry still looks beautiful.

Be clear about who will hold the piece before and after the ceremony. If it is valuable, an updated jewelry appraisal can provide useful documentation for insurance.

If the heirloom needs a new setting or another thoughtful update, we can also talk with you about custom jewelry design.

Check Everything Before the Wedding

A few weeks before the ceremony, we recommend laying out every piece and trying it on with the dress if possible. Wear your veil and style your hair in a similar way so you can see the full look!

Make sure each clasp closes securely, and every ring fits. Walk around for a few minutes. Earrings that feel comfortable at first may feel heavy later, and a bracelet can catch once you start moving.

Keep everything together in a small jewelry case as the wedding approaches. On the day itself, ask someone you trust to hold the case until you’re ready to get dressed. That person can also collect any borrowed pieces after the reception.

Your final checklist should include:

  • Engagement ring cleaned and inspected
  • Wedding bands sized and ready
  • Earrings
  • Necklace, if wearing one
  • Bracelet, if wearing one
  • Something borrowed
  • Jewelry case or individual pouches
  • A trusted person assigned to hold the jewelry

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start shopping for bridal jewelry?

Begin once you’ve selected your dress. Four to six months before the wedding leaves plenty of time for shopping, custom work, engraving, repairs, and sizing.

Do my engagement ring and wedding band need to match?

They can use the same metal and design details, or each ring can have its own special look. Try them together to make sure they sit comfortably and create a pairing you’ll enjoy wearing every day.

How much jewelry should a bride wear?

Wear the pieces that feel natural with your dress and personal style. Some brides choose earrings, a necklace, and a bracelet. Others feel complete with their rings and one pair of earrings.

Can I wear family jewelry at my wedding?

Absolutely. Bring heirloom jewelry in ahead of time so we can inspect, clean, resize, or repair it if needed.

How should I care for bridal jewelry?

Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or lined case. Have fine jewelry cleaned and inspected before the wedding, then bring it back periodically to check the stones, settings, and clasps.

Should we shop for wedding bands together?

Many couples enjoy choosing their bands together, even when they prefer different styles. It gives both people time to compare fit, metal, and comfort before ordering.
