How Do You Secretly Find Someone's Ring Size Before a Proposal?

How Do You Secretly Find Someone's Ring Size Before a Proposal?

The least romantic part of planning a surprise proposal is often the first: finding out a ring size without a single raised eyebrow. A near miss is easy to fix.

The easiest way to find a ring size in secret is to borrow a ring your partner already wears on the same finger and have a jeweler measure it. If that isn't possible, quietly ask a trusted friend or family member, then lean slightly larger, since a ring can be adjusted after the proposal.

Start With Which Finger and Hand

Engagement rings traditionally go on the left ring finger, so that's the size you want. Sizes can differ between hands and between fingers, so a ring worn elsewhere is a loose clue at best.

Low-Key Ways to Find the Size

Borrow a ring. Choose one worn on the same finger, ideally not an everyday piece, and return it before it's missed. A jeweler can measure it far better than a guess at home.

Ask someone close. A sibling, parent or best friend may know or can find out casually. Keep the circle small, since each extra person is another chance for a slip.

Shop for something everyday together. Browsing for a casual ring gives them a natural reason to try a few on.

Use a rough guide. Tracing a ring on paper, a strip of string or a plastic sizer will get you close. Treat the result as an estimate for a jeweler to confirm.

What If You Cannot Find Out?

Plenty of people propose without a number. Guess slightly larger and choose a forgiving style. Plain bands and classic solitaires are generally easier to adjust than rings with stones set around much of the band, so keep that in mind as you browse our engagement rings.

A ring that's a touch loose is the safer mistake, and wider bands fit tighter than narrow ones, so go a little larger with a broad band. Dreaming up something one of a kind? Mention resizing at your custom design consultation so the band is planned with it in mind.

How Resizing Works After the Proposal

Once you have a yes, bring the ring in so we can check the fit. A good fit slides on easily and pulls slightly coming off, snug without squeezing. Our certified master goldsmith handles ring resizing.

To size down, a small piece of the band is removed and the ends are rejoined by torch solder or laser weld. To size up, a slight increase can come from stretching the band up to half a size, and a larger one from adding matching metal. There's more in our post on how resizing works, and our proposal planning guide covers the rest of the big day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my partner's ring size without asking?

Borrow a ring they already wear on the intended finger, preferably one they wear rarely, and have a jeweler measure it. If that isn't possible, quietly ask a sibling, parent or close friend. Tracing or string measurements are only rough guides, so treat any result as an estimate.

Is it better to buy a ring that is too big or too small?

Slightly too big is the safer miss. A ring that's a little loose can be held in place with sizing beads until it's adjusted, and sizing down is generally simpler than sizing up. A ring that's too tight can't be slipped on at the big moment.

Which finger and hand should I use as the reference?

Use the left ring finger as your reference, since that's where engagement rings traditionally go. Sizes can differ between hands and between fingers, so a ring your partner wears elsewhere is only a loose guide. Tell the jeweler which finger the borrowed ring came from.

Can every engagement ring be resized?

Not every design resizes freely. Rings with stones set around much of the band, eternity styles and detailed patterns limit how far the metal can move, so ask a jeweler to assess a design before you buy. Plain bands and classic solitaires tend to be the easiest to adjust.

What happens to the stones when a ring is resized?

Stones are checked and tightened afterward, because they can shift while the band is being sized. Our certified master goldsmith does this work as part of resizing, and laser welding can be used on rings with gemstones, so the stones stay secure and the ring is ready to wear.
