An anniversary has a way of making you take stock of the years you’ve shared and the life you’ve built together. For some couples, it also feels like the right time to revisit the engagement ring that started it all.
An engagement ring upgrade can take several forms. You might choose a larger diamond, change the setting, incorporate family stones, or create something custom. We help couples explore all of these options at Peter & Co. Jewelers, including those who arrive with a clear vision and those who are simply curious about what’s possible.
Why Upgrade an Engagement Ring?
There are plenty of reasons to consider an anniversary ring upgrade. Perhaps the original ring was chosen when your budget was smaller. Maybe the setting has seen years of daily wear, or your taste has changed since the proposal.
Milestone anniversaries such as the fifth, tenth, twentieth, and twenty-fifth are popular times to make the change. We’ve also worked with couples who chose a less traditional year because it held personal meaning. The timing is entirely yours.
Your original ring remains part of your story after an upgrade. Its diamond may move into a new setting, or the complete ring can be saved and passed down. Some couples even use the original stone in a pendant or another piece of jewelry.
Begin With Your Current Diamond
A larger center diamond is often the first idea that comes to mind. Size is only one part of the decision, though. Shape, cut, color, clarity, and the proportions of the new setting all affect how the finished ring will look.
At Peter & Co., the original purchase price of an eligible natural diamond bought from us can be applied toward a new diamond. If the diamond came from another jeweler, we can evaluate it and determine a fair trade-in value.
Our diamond upgrade service is available for qualifying natural center diamonds, diamond stud earrings, and diamond solitaire necklaces. Eligible diamonds must be in like-new condition without chips, abrasions, or other damage. The program does not currently include lab-grown diamonds or the smaller accent stones surrounding a center diamond.
You can also browse our natural diamond selection to compare shapes, sizes, and grades before visiting us.
You Can Keep the Original Diamond
Many people feel deeply connected to their original stone. In that case, changing the setting may be the better fit.
A solitaire diamond can feel completely refreshed in a halo, pavé, three-stone, or modern bezel setting. Changing the metal can have a similar effect. Yellow gold adds warmth, while platinum and white gold create a cooler look. Rose gold brings its own softness.
We’ll also look at how the new setting sits beside your wedding band and how it works with your daily routine. A beautiful design still needs to feel comfortable and secure on your hand.
Our engagement ring collection is a helpful place to gather ideas. You may find yourself drawn to a detail you hadn’t previously considered.
Bring Your Ring in for an Evaluation
Before making decisions, bring the current ring to our Avon Lake showroom. We can look at the diamond, inspect its condition, and talk through the options that make sense for the piece.
Bring any paperwork you still have, including the original receipt, diamond grading report, or appraisal. These documents can give us useful information about the stone and its purchase history.
This appointment is also a good opportunity to check the setting for worn prongs, loose stones, or other signs of wear. Engagement rings are worn through ordinary life, and even a well-cared-for setting may need attention after many years.
Consider a Custom Anniversary Ring
A custom design gives you the freedom to build around the parts of the original ring you still love.
You might keep the center diamond, add family stones, change the metal, or include a small detail that means something only to the two of you. We can also design a setting that fits more comfortably with an existing wedding band.
Some clients come in with saved photographs and a very specific idea. Others know only that their current ring no longer feels quite right. Both are perfectly good starting points. Our custom jewelry design process begins with a conversation, and the design develops from there.
If you have diamonds or gemstones from family jewelry, bring them with you. We’ll examine their condition and discuss how to use them safely in the new piece.
Should the Upgrade Be a Surprise?
Couples handle this decision in all sorts of ways.
Many choose the new diamond and setting together. It can be a lovely anniversary experience, especially when both people were part of the original ring story. Others agree on a general direction and leave the final design or presentation as a surprise.
If you’re planning the upgrade for your partner, a few reference photos can help. Pay attention to the jewelry they wear now, the metal they prefer, and any comments they’ve made about their current ring. We can help you sort through those details during your visit.
Give the Process Enough Time
Start several months before the anniversary if you’re planning custom work or searching for a particular diamond. A ring chosen from an existing collection may still need sizing, setting adjustments, or polishing.
Extra time also gives you room to think. Anniversary jewelry deserves careful consideration, and the process should feel enjoyable.
When the ring is ready, the presentation can be as simple or elaborate as you like. A handwritten letter, a private dinner, or a return to a meaningful place can make the moment feel especially personal.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I upgrade my engagement ring?
Many couples choose a milestone anniversary, though any year can be meaningful. A vow renewal, family milestone, or personal achievement may also feel like the right occasion.
Do I have to replace the original diamond?
You can keep the original diamond and place it in a new setting. You can also trade an eligible natural diamond toward a different center stone. We can walk you through both possibilities after seeing the ring.
How does the Peter & Co. diamond upgrade program work?
The original purchase price of a qualifying natural diamond purchased from Peter & Co. may be applied toward an upgraded diamond. We can evaluate natural diamonds purchased elsewhere for a possible trade-in value. Eligibility depends on the diamond and its condition.
Can I upgrade a lab-grown diamond?
Our current upgrade program applies to qualifying natural diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are not included.
How do I find out what my current ring is worth?
Bring the ring and any available paperwork to us for an evaluation. The diamond’s condition, quality, purchase history, and supporting documentation can all affect the conversation.
How long does a custom engagement ring upgrade take?
Timing varies with the design and diamond selection. We suggest starting several months ahead if you’re working toward a particular anniversary date.
Can we design the upgrade together?
Absolutely. Many couples enjoy choosing the diamond and setting together. You can also make the major decisions as a couple and save the final ring for a surprise.
Can family stones be included in the new ring?
In many cases, yes. We’ll need to inspect each stone and make sure it is suitable for the planned setting before developing the design.
